Does waxing hurt?

Well, it’s pretty much like the feeling when a hair is pulled from your head. Of course, the thickness, area and quantity of hairs change that feeling. To help lessen any pain, you could try taking an aspirin, ibuprofen or other pain-reliever 30 minutes prior to your treatment. At the beauty place we also have a numbing spray that can help, especially in more sensitive areas. There are also differences resulting from the skills of different therapists, so try to get a recommendation based on skill, not price for your first time waxing.

How long does waxing last?

For most people the results should last 1 – 2 weeks. When the hair grows back, it also starts off very fine like new hair, which means the initial re-growth is not as noticeable as the stubble from shaving. It also won’t catch on clothing like stubble either. Over time, hair should start growing back a little thinner as well.

How can I make waxing less painful?

Taking an aspirin or other mild pain-killer 30 minutes before your treatment should help, as well as reducing caffeine intake prior. Avoid waxing during your period if you normally have more skin sensitivity during this time. We also have skin numbing products that help desensitize the skin prior to treatment.

How often can I wax?

This depends completely on you and your rate of hair growth. Hair needs to be at least at least a quarter of an inch or almost 1cm in length for the wax to be able to properly ‘grip’ the hair for extraction. Any shorter will probably result with hairs being left behind. Of course, some shorter hairs could be tweezed out afterwards, however this will add time to your treatment.

How should I prepare for my waxing?

There’s not so much for you to do before your wax, however a little effort will go a long ways to a better result. Consider the following:

- Mildly exfoliate the area a few hours to a day in advance using a non-irritating salt or sugar scrub.

- Avoid excessive exercise or activity, like sex, that may inflame the skin at least a few hours prior to treatment to help avoid unnecessary irritation to your skin.

- Leave yourself time to arrive early, relaxed and cool. Rushing to your treatment and arriving hot and possibly sweating will not be good for the waxing process.

- Take a mild pain-killer, like aspirin, 30 minutes prior to your treatment to help lessen any pain if your concerned.

- Try to avoid waxing during your period if you experience increased skin sensitivity during this time. Also, wear a tampon if you must have your bikini area waxed during this time.

Is there anything for me to do after my waxing?

At first it’s mostly about what not to do, but there are some things you can do to help maintain a great result. Consider the following:

- Avoid irritating the skin immediately after treatment to reduce any inflammation. Friction, heat and sweating from exercise or other activities, (yes, this includes sex), can increase likely ingrown hairs.

- Your skin may feel amazing, but avoid touching freshly waxed skin for the first 24 hours to avoid spreading bacteria to skin that may be inflamed with pores more open than usual.

- Moisturize dry skin.

- A light salt/sugar scrub 2-3 times per week, but not for the first 48 hours after waxing, can help hairs break the surface to help avoid ingrown hairs.

- If you are prone to getting ingrown hairs, there are some topical products that can help, like Bump Eraser from Caron. We have this and other products available for retail.

Can I wax during my period?

This depends on you. Some people may experience higher levels of skin sensitivity during this time, so this is really your choice based on your conditions. Regarding bikini-area waxing, it’s best to wear a tampon if your waxing needs are urgent.

Will I get ingrown hairs?

If you are prone to ingrown hairs from shaving, then you may still have this problem after waxing. However, there are things you can do to improve the situation, which is answered below..

How can I prevent ingrown hairs?

Whether from waxing or other hair removal methods, there are things you can do, and some to avoid, to help lessen ingrown hairs:

- A light salt/sugar scrub 2-3 times per week, but not for the first 48 hours after waxing, can help hairs break the surface.
